Stats Champ

From floppy disks to fairways: Why I built Stats Champ for golf

I’ve always been fascinated by numbers. Not just as dry data on a page, but as a language that tells a story about performance.

In 1991, while most people were just getting used to the idea of a home computer, I was busy building my first golf stats tracker in Excel. I’m fairly certain that file is still living on a dusty 3.5-inch floppy disk somewhere in my attic. Even back then, I knew that if I could measure it, I could improve it.

A career at the intersection of tech and sport

Technology has been the pulse of my professional life. My journey has taken me through hardware giants, management consulting, and the high-stakes world of tech start-ups. However, it was my time at Kinexit—a golf fitness app—that truly opened my eyes.

While Kinexit is no longer around, the insights I gained there were invaluable. I saw firsthand how hungry golfers were for improvement, but I also noticed a massive gap in the market. There were plenty of “swing” apps and “GPS” apps, but nothing that connected the dots between fitness, practice, and performance.

I kept coming back to square one: my passion for statistics.

The vision: A 360-degree view of your game

The modern golfer is overwhelmed with data but starved for insight. Most of us track our scores, but we don’t track the “why” behind them.

My vision for Stats Champ is to create a single source of truth for your game. We aren’t just another scorecard app; we are a performance ecosystem. We want to help you answer the tough questions:

  • The practice gap: Does your 2-hour range session actually translate to fewer three-putts on Sunday?

  • The tournament “tax”: Why do you shoot 75 in a private round but struggle to break 85 when the pressure is on?

  • The fitness correlation: How much does your gym routine actually impact your strokes gained off the tee?

Walking the talk: My 2025 journey

I don’t just build these tools; I live by them. I’ve played golf since 1989 (yes, I am that old), and 2025 was my best year on the course—ever.

My handicap has never been lower (I hit 0.0 for a few months before finishing the year at 0.1). My swing, ball striking, and putting have never been more consistent. But that didn’t happen by accident. A couple of years ago, I started diving deep into my own stats again.

The data was honest with me: I hit 70% of my fairways in 2025, but only 55% of my greens. It became clear that hitting more Greens in Regulation (GIR) is the key to my next breakthrough. Because of these insights, my winter focus is locked in: speed and distance control with my irons.

Data is the fuel

It’s no secret that golf has become a power game. At the professional level, the players who hit it the furthest generally make the most money. But for the rest of us, power without precision is just a faster way to find the woods.

Stats Champ is designed for the golfer who is tired of guessing. We provide the map and the tracking tools to help you become the best version of yourself on the course.

We help you track the progress, but you still have to put in the work.
